Clean Teeth Braces

Wearing braces can be alot of work. Make sure you do everything you need to do to get a great outcome.

Having braces on for years and not taking care of your teeth properly can have some very negative effects. If you do not take care of your teeth properly you can develop heavy stains or more serious dental issues. The braces protect a certain area on the teeth, so if your teeth do not stay the same white shade that they are when you put the braces on, you will end up with white spots on your teeth. It is important to take special care of your teeth while wearing braces.

It is important to brush your teeth often. It is recommended that you brush your teeth at least three times a day. It is important to make sure you brush your teeth long enough also. You should try to spend 25-30 seconds for each bracket. It will take more time than usual, but it will be worth it with the end result. Playing a song or two while brushing your teeth or setting a timer are a good way to make sure you are brushing your teeth long enough each time. You should move the toothbrush quickly to be sure to remove any food debris or particles, but be gentle around braces! If you brush too aggressively you can bend these very expensive mouth pieces!

Use regular toothpaste. Make sure not to use any toothpaste with whitening in it. Remember the whole goal is not to change the color of your teeth while you are wearing braces.

There are many tools you will need to brush your teeth properly while wearing braces. Your orthodontist will probably suggest you use a proxy brush, (sometimes known as a "Christmas tree brush"). This is a thin brush that can get in those really small areas. It is also a good idea to have two toothbrushes -- a fine bristle toothbrush and a soft bristle toothbrush. The soft bristle toothbrush is good for general area. The fine bristle toothbrush or the proxy brush is good for smaller areas. It is important to keep all areas clean. Even if they are hard to see now while you have your braces on, they may be easier to see when your braces are removed and you don't want them to be stained!

You should also still floss and use mouthwash as usual. Flossing is always important for gum and dental health. It is particularly important while wearing braces because you do not want any food particles to be stuck around your braces and give you bad breath. Mouthwash is always important for gum and dental health also. Use a regular mouth wash. Make sure not to use any whitening mouthwash.

It is a big, expensive responsibility to wear braces but it is worth the outcome if you can do everything you need to do.
