Common Oral Health Problems

Your mouth and teeth health needs special care and attention. Identify the common oral health problems and know how to prevent them.

The mouth is one important part of our overall health that needs special care and attention. By having a single oral problem, your normal functions will be very much affected. Identify the different common oral health problems and take the measures on how to prevent them from occuring.

  • Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

This is a very common dental problem to young children. Extended exposure to sugar-rich food and fluids are mostly the number one cause of tooth decay. It can be characterized by a visible cavity of the tooth. If a food particle sets in it, it can be very painful that could affect your child's nutrition. Therefore, it is very important that the mouth and teeth of the child will be cleansed or brushed before napping and going to bed and preferably every after feeding to prevent tooth decay.

  • Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums that usually starts to develop during puberty. Signs and symptoms include gum swelling and redness, bleeds easily when brushed, and tenderness when touched. This is most likely caused by poor oral hygiene. Other underlying causes may include poor nutrition, stress, smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, injury to the gum, side effects of certain medications, and some problems like misaligned or rough teeth. Good oral hygiene and counteracting on the underlying causes are the best preventive measures for gingivitis.

  • Halitosis

Also known as bad breath. Halitosis can be caused by many factors. Food sticks that are left in mouth and in between the teeth may rotten, thus causing bad odor. Certain foods and beverages are also causing bad breath such as onions, garlic, soda, orange juice, cheese, pastrami, and other spices. It can also be a sign of other health problems like gingivitis, chronic lung infections, liver or kidney diseases, and diabetes. Brushing at least twice a day using a flouride toothpaste and flossing everyday can help prevent halitosis. By eating more fruits and vegetables are also helpful to counteract the cause of bad breath. Eating less meat and not smoking should be avoided to prevent this oral problem.

  • Tooth Abscess

This is common dental condition of anybody. A dental abscess is a painful infection characterized by a collection of pus at the root of the tooth or at the area between the gum and the tooth. It may have developed as a complication of a tooth decay or from an infection in the gums. It can cause a serious health complication if left untreated. If you suspect you have a tooth abscess, respond immediately by going to your dentist as it does not heal by itself. It requires a proper treatment. Still good oral hygiene is very important and treating other causes are the best thing you can do to prevent such problem.

  • Toothache

Toothache or tooth pain is caused when the nerve root of a tooth is irritated. Dental infection, decay, injury, or loss of a tooth are the most common causes of dental pain. Bacteria growing inside your mouth can contribute to gum disease, plaque, and dental decay. These problems can become painful. You can prevent the majority of dental problems through flossing, brushing with fluoride toothpaste, and having your teeth professionally cleaned twice a year. The dentist may apply sealants and fluoride, which are especially important in children.

  • Dental Plaque

Dental plaque is a sticky, colorless film that continually forms in between and on the surface of the teeth. Dental plaque is a biofilm that is made up of microorganisms such as streptococcus mutans and other bacteria. It can develop on teeth above the gum line , below the gum line on the roots of teeth, and along the gum line. When plaque accumulates beneath the gum line, the associated buildup of bacteria and tartar can cause irritation and inflammation of the gum tissue and can lead to the development of gingivitis and gum disease. Continued plaque accumulation can contribute to structural damage to your teeth and the bone supporting the teeth and gums, as well as other health complications. This can be controlled by routine professional teeth cleanings and more diligent brushing and flossing at home.

  • Sensitive Teeth

Sensitive teeth are characterized by a tingling sensation or sharp shooting pain that occurs when you consume food or drink that is very cold, hot or sweet. Teeth usually become more sensitive when the gums surrounding them begin to recede and the roots are exposed. This can be caused by brushing your teeth too vigorously with a firm toothbrush, or by poor oral hygiene. Your dentist may recommend that you switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush, and brush teeth gently. The dentist may also recommend using a special toothpaste or mouthwash designed for sensitive teeth.

Great article! You've done an excellent job and explained everything so well that an elementary student could understand it. I hope you don't mind my adding to what you said about the reasons one might have receding gums and roots that become exposed. Being a senior citizen and all has opened my eyes to one of the few parts of our bodies that do not fall or get lower as one ages. Our gums! A person's gums recede as they get older. Some cultures refer to someone who is old as being, "long in tooth." Meaning, of course, that more of their teeth are showing because of the gums receding. (ugh! Not a pretty picture, right? But true nonetheless.) Thank you for this great article on oral health problems. I'm out of votes, but am buzzing it up!
